Colombian Culture Showcased at 5th Colombian Serenade in Davis
Members of the Colombian community in Davis are coming together to share their culture with the Davis community and raise money for the Nazareth Health Center, which is in a village in Vichada, Colombia, with a benefit event Saturday night, December 4. The 5th Colombian Serenade/Serenata Colombiana will take place from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. at the Davis Senior Center MPR at 646 "A" St., Davis. Admission is free with a suggested donation of $5 per person.
The cultural show will begin at 7:30 p.m. followed by a half-hour intermission where Colombian "pan de bono", a cheese bread snack made of yucca starch, and "aguadepanela", a hot beverage made of pure raw sugar with water, lemon, and cinnamon, will be offered. The presentation will showcase music and dance by five Colombian groups and a special invited group from Chile. The two groups in the second half of the program will feature the Colombian folk music group Los Primos and the folkloric dance group Colombia Viva. In the past five years, Los Primos and Colombia Viva have hosted the Colombian Serenade in Davis and have participated in several regional cultural events including the San Francisco Carnival, the Festival de la Familia in Sacramento, and the Latin American Festival in Davis.
The Serenade will take its audience on a brief musical tour of Colombia and its rhythms from the coastal cumbia and vallenato to the Andean bambuco and sanjuanero and the joropo from the plains. Each one of these rhythms uses many typical Colombian instruments to interpret its music (e.g., tambora, guache, maracas, conga, cuatro, bandola, guitar, etc.).
Donations collected at the event will be given to the Nazareth Health Center in Nazareth, Vichada, Colombia. Nazareth is a village in Vichada county that is a perfect example of the sad reality that exists in the majority of the remote villages in Colombia. The Nazareth Health Center, which is located strategically to serve many people from the surrounding area (4,000 sq. kmts/10,000 sq. miles), does not have the fundamental elements that it needs to function efficiently and effectively. It lacks basic elements like potable water, beds, equipment for minor surgeries, and medical and paramedical supplies and instruments (e.g., phonendoscopes, glucometer, etc.) as well as furniture like chairs, desks, mattresses, sheets, and pillows to name some items. This Center assists approximately 200 people who consist of colonizers, displaced people from the violence zones, and Indians from the area.
